Assistant Planning Manager / Full time

Your new role

National Highways is currently recruiting an Assistant Planning Manager for our Network Planning Division. The Division’s main purpose is to develop and maintain the company’s strategic vision, lead and commission a series of strategic studies and route strategies, facilitate our approach to economic growth and spatial planning, sponsor major schemes and manage National Highways response to major UK infrastructure projects.

This is an excellent, flexible, opportunity for an enthusiastic individual, ideally with economic development or Town Planning background, to use their knowledge and experience to enable us to progress further how the company supports economic growth as a major infrastructure provider.

The role will play a crucial part in implementing the company’s strategic economic growth plan Road to Growth, and supporting strategic planning of the Strategic Road Network (SRN), including Route Strategies.

The role can be based from Manchester, Leeds, Bristol or Birmingham with travel to other National Highways offices as required.

What you’ll be leading on  

• Progressing activity that delivers the company’s strategic economic growth plan Road to Growth, especially enabling effective performance of road reliant sectors in the economy, supporting access to international markets and enabling growth through our spatial planning role.

• Supporting the delivery of core strategic planning projects, including route strategies.

• Ensuring quality assurance and overall integrity of projects and programmes – focusing internal consistency, coherence and interfaces with other external programmes, and delivering outputs to meet corporate technical and specialists’ standards. 

• Working collaboratively with key internal and external delivery partners to understand processes, capture requirements, identify and test improvements. 

To be successful

• Experience of providing support and challenge to proactively resolve issues and respond to problems using appropriate approaches. 

• Ideally some experience of working successfully in a programme or project management environment, with proven application of project management approaches to achieve project/programme delivery. 

• Experience of managing and co-ordinating workloads across teams, including those not directly managed, to achieve maximum efficiency and achieve excellent team working environment.

• Ability to work collaboratively, with a range of colleagues, subject matter experts and business partners both in the wider organisation and externally

• Good presentation and communication skills to convey complex information to a wide audience

Our directorate plays a crucial role at the heart of National Highways, providing strategic direction to the organisation and working closely with all the other directorates to enable delivery of the company’s ambitious agenda.  We lead on key corporate initiatives including the long-term ambition for our Strategic Road Network (SRN), the production and review of the 5-year Strategic Business and Delivery Plans and developing our national plans covering route strategies, investment and economic growth.
