The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a qualified Planning Officer within our Development Management Team dealing with planning applications, pre applications and appeals. The post is for a  Principal Planning Officer. With excellent communication skills you’ll assume responsibility for effective negotiation and resolution, supporting growth and regeneration that reflects the Council’s wider positive objectives and policies of promoting high quality and innovative development while protecting the environment and conserving the historic character of the Borough.

Hastings has seen significant development in the past few years, not least a multi-million pound project to restore its historic pier and the economy-boosting link road. Regeneration that improves the environment is one of Hastings key goals. In June 2021, Hastings Borough Council was awarded £24.3m from the Government’s Towns Fund. This will kick start the re-set button for Hastings and its regeneration ambitions. Hastings’ £24.3m investment includes a new green and low carbon Centre of Excellence that will provide new commercial space while also helping the town seize the opportunities of the emerging green economy. It will also boost the town’s tourism offer through improvements to Hastings Castle, the first Norman castle built by William the Conqueror in 1067, and other public spaces.

Who are you?

The ideal person for this role will have experience in assessing and determining more complex planning applications. Ideally this will include major applications. However this may be an opportunity for you to jump into a more senior role and expand your experience. As a Principal Planning Officer at Hastings you would deal with major applications. You will also be able to demonstrate an excellent knowledge of Development Management. You’ll have the ability to read and assess plans, write accurate and concise reports, as well as meet tight deadlines. You will be able to project manage your work to meet Council and Government targets and you’ll have excellent knowledge of planning legislation and policy at local, regional, and national levels.  

You’ll have excellent communication and customer-care skills and be comfortable presenting at meetings including Planning Committee. You will have the ability to work flexibly, as part of a busy and high performing team. You may have relevant qualifications but if you don’t, it’s not a problem because we can provide you with opportunities to undertake relevant training, should you wish to do so,  to help you develop in your role and further progress your career.
