Principal and Senior Planning Officers (Strategic Planning) / Full time

Maidstone Borough Council

Up to £45,565

Maidstone, South East

PJCOM120

Description

Principal and Senior Planning Officers (Strategic Planning)
Up to £45,565 (including Base Salary, Market Supplement & Car Allowance) + generous relocation allowance of up to £9,500 if applicable.

Maidstone Borough Council is a progressive and pro-active local authority, located less than an hour from central London, with strong ambitions for the future of Kent’s County Town and its surrounding countryside. This makes us an ideal proposition for Planners wishing to apply their previous strategic planning experience to our town and country environment.

The large, historic County Town offers a unique and diverse context and we’re the first borough in Kent that falls outside the Metropolitan Green Belt, making us an attractive place for investment and future development. We therefore work on a varied canvas - embracing growth and enabling infrastructure whilst maintaining our local heritage and identity.

Maidstone Borough’s Local Plan was adopted in October 2017 and the Local Plan Review is well underway. We have recently completed a public consultation on ‘Scoping, Themes and Issues’ and are now working towards preferred approaches, including meeting an increase in housing need of around 40%. Careful management of competing pressures whilst shaping the place making agenda is therefore the primary task.

If you wish to work in a dynamic environment where strategic planning is front and centre in the Council’s priorities, we have some new and exciting roles.

We are recruiting for Principal and Senior Planning Officers working in our busy, high profile Strategic Planning team playing a key part in the effective delivery of the service. Ongoing implementation of the adopted Maidstone Local Plan means that the Council is meeting its key government delivery requirements. We are also working closely with infrastructure and service providers, including Kent County Council, to support future growth in housing and jobs. You will have the opportunity to help ensure this continues. With Maidstone Local Plan Review underway and our Community Infrastructure Levy due to be reviewed, you could also play a key role in evidencing and shaping these documents and the future of Maidstone Borough, so this is a great time to join our experienced and expanding team.

We are looking for enthusiastic and self-motivated individuals, with previous strategic planning experience, who are looking for the next step in their career.  You will need to be able to work effectively with the public, the development industry, key stakeholders, and Members, including presenting at committees. Ideally, you will be a member of the RTPI and your experience will include collaborative working with other Council departments and external organisations.

For an information discussion about the roles please call Mark Egerton, Strategic Planning Manager on 01622 602062.

Working in Maidstone you’ll have the opportunity to develop your skills and experience within an organisation that prides itself on supporting its staff. We encourage all types of vocational and technical training & qualifications, including management and leadership programmes. As part of our succession/career planning, you will be given the time away from work to study and develop your career. In addition to learning & development, we also offer many flexible working opportunities, including flexi time, nine-day fortnight, compressed hours, part-time working and home mobile working

We welcome applications from outside of the region and if the successful candidate is able to relocate, a generous relocation package may be available up to £9,500 for costs incurred due to travelling, disturbance and removals.

Closing Date: Sunday 1st March 2020
Interview Date:  w/c 9th March 2020

Council Benefits:  career average pension scheme, professional fee payment, flexible working (including opportunities for home working and job share), employee benefits package and generous leave entitlement.
