We are looking for a Planning Specialist to join the Devon, Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Sustainable Places Team. You’ll provide technical leadership on Town & Country Planning to the team and lead engagement on Local Plans for a range of Local Planning Authorities. The role offers opportunities to develop your leadership, programme management, and engagement skills.

Your career to date will include developing policies or projects with an environmental focus. You’ll have experience of leading others and managing projects and or programmes. You’ll have excellent communication skills that will be complemented by your ability to engage and build relationships with external partners.

The team  

Sustainable Places has a cross cutting, multifunctional role and we lead the Environment Agency’s input into development and growth. We are a positive, knowledgeable and supportive team that takes pride in securing environmental outcomes by working closely with internal colleagues, 14 Local Planning Authorities, developers, strategic partners and Defra family.

Experience/skills required  

• You will be qualified to at least degree standard (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline and or experience of working in the Town & Country Planning system in an environmental role.
• Membership or demonstration of progression towards membership of a relevant professional body is desirable.
• Excellent communication and networking skills with the ability to collaborate with others.
• Ability to synthesise information from a wide range of sources, identify and present the key facts.
• Ability to make sound decisions based on competing or complex factors.
• Ability to confidently negotiate and influence others.
• Effective programme management.
• Ability to coach and mentor others.
• A willingness to contribute to a diverse and inclusive work culture.
• An interest to seek new innovative ways of working.

Most importantly though, a passion to have a career that creates a better place for people and wildlife.

Contact and additional information  

The role can be based at either the Exeter or Bodmin office. There will be some travel between our offices and to our customers’ sites and offices. Candidates need to hold a full driving licence. Travel outside of the area may be required occasionally.

There are opportunities to get involved with incident management and you will be encouraged to take up an incident management role. We have a flexible range of roles you can volunteer for and you’ll get all the training and support you need.
