How planners can stand out in a competitive market

The UK planning sector remains busy, but competition for the best roles is increasing — especially at Senior, Principal and Team Leader level. Planners looking to progress can benefit from sharpening a few key areas that employers consistently highlight.

Strong report‑writing remains essential, particularly for complex or contentious applications. Demonstrating confidence in presenting to committees or leading public engagement sessions is another major advantage. Employers also value planners who can manage caseloads independently while supporting junior colleagues.

RTPI membership continues to be a differentiator, especially for roles in councils and larger consultancies. Candidates who show awareness of emerging policy — design codes, biodiversity net gain, digital planning tools — tend to stand out during interviews.

For planners aiming to move up a grade, showcasing leadership behaviours, even informally, can make a significant difference. Mentoring colleagues, taking ownership of challenging cases, and contributing to team improvements all help build a strong progression narrative.
