An Environmental Planner works within UK local authorities to integrate environmental considerations into planning decisions, policies and projects. They assess the environmental impacts of development proposals, support environmental assessments, advise on ecology, landscape and biodiversity, and help ensure planning outcomes support climate resilience and sustainable land use.
This role requires strong knowledge of environmental legislation, planning policy, ecology and landscape, alongside the ability to interpret technical reports and balance development needs with environmental protection.
Main Responsibilities
Assess environmental impacts of planning applications and major developments
Review Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), ecological surveys and technical reports
Advise planners and developers on biodiversity, landscape and environmental mitigation
Support development of environmental and sustainability policies within Local Plans
Work with climate, ecology and transport teams on cross‑cutting projects
Engage with statutory consultees, communities and environmental organisations
Represent the authority at committees, hearings and public meetings
