Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is the principal environmental body for Wales, responsible for managing the nation’s natural resources and ensuring they are protected, enhanced and used sustainably. Formed in 2013, NRW brings together the work of the former Environment Agency Wales, Countryside Council for Wales and Forestry Commission Wales, creating a single organisation with wide‑ranging environmental, regulatory and land‑management responsibilities.

NRW manages forests, nature reserves, flood defences, rivers, coastlines and protected landscapes across Wales. It regulates industry, development and environmental activity, ensuring compliance with environmental law and supporting safe, responsible use of land and water. The organisation also provides expert advice to government, local authorities, developers and communities on issues such as biodiversity, climate change, land use, water quality and sustainable development.

A major focus of NRW’s work is tackling the climate and nature emergencies — from restoring habitats and improving biodiversity to reducing flood risk, supporting renewable energy and managing Wales’ public forests.
