Planning in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council, known as BCP Council, is the unitary planning authority for the large coastal conurbation on the Dorset coast. It takes in Bournemouth's town centre and seafront, Poole with its harbour and port, Christchurch and its harbour, and suburbs such as Boscombe, Kinson, Broadstone, Highcliffe and Canford Heath. The council deals with all planning matters, including highways, and shares minerals and waste planning with Dorset Council.

The conurbation has little room to expand. It is hemmed in by the sea, protected heathland, river valleys and the South East Dorset Green Belt, so most new homes come through higher-density schemes, conversions and town-centre regeneration. Development near the heaths must provide mitigation, and Poole Harbour's protected status brings nutrient and recreation issues. Seafront and tourism projects, flood risk around the harbours and the Port of Poole add variety. Roles at BCP and local consultancies cover regeneration, major applications, policy and casework.
