Planning in West Sussex

West Sussex has seven district and borough councils: Adur, Arun, Chichester, Crawley, Horsham, Mid Sussex and Worthing. West Sussex County Council handles minerals, waste and highways. Chichester is the cathedral city and administrative centre, Crawley is the largest town, and the coast runs from Selsey and Bognor Regis through Littlehampton and Worthing to Shoreham-by-Sea.

The South Downs National Park cuts across the county, and its National Park Authority is the planning authority there, including for Midhurst and Petworth. To the north the High Weald National Landscape covers part of Mid Sussex and Horsham, and Chichester Harbour National Landscape protects the western coast. Gatwick Airport and the Manor Royal business district make Crawley a major employment centre, while large housing areas around Horsham, Burgess Hill and Crawley's edge drive much of the county's growth. Water neutrality in the north of the county and wastewater capacity near the coast have added extra layers to many decisions. Adur and Worthing share a planning team, and consultancies along the coast and around Crawley offer further work.
