Somerset Council is the unitary authority created in 2023 from Somerset County Council and the former Mendip, Sedgemoor, Somerset West and Taunton, and South Somerset district councils. It serves towns including Taunton, Yeovil, Bridgwater, Frome, Wells, Glastonbury and Minehead, and runs all local council services from its base at County Hall in Taunton.
The council is bringing several inherited local plans together into a single plan for Somerset. Phosphate pollution affecting the Somerset Levels and Moors has had a major effect on housing decisions, and much of the county is low-lying and prone to flooding. Hinkley Point C, the Gravity enterprise zone near Bridgwater and growth at Taunton and Yeovil sit alongside minerals and waste planning, the Mendip quarries and rural casework, while Exmoor National Park has its own planning authority.
