Working at West Berkshire Council
West Berkshire Council is the unitary authority for the western half of Berkshire, serving Newbury, where it is based, along with Thatcham, Hungerford, Theale, Calcot, Pangbourne and Lambourn. It runs all local council services, including schools, social care, highways, waste and planning.
Much of the district lies within the North Wessex Downs National Landscape, so its planning teams balance housing need with protected chalk downland and river valleys such as the Kennet and Lambourn. Officers work on the Local Plan and minerals and waste planning, and handle casework ranging from growth at Newbury and Thatcham to racehorse training around Lambourn. Development near the Atomic Weapons Establishment sites at Aldermaston and Burghfield is subject to particular restrictions.
