Description

The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority is responsible for caring for one of England’s most iconic upland landscapes — a protected area of dramatic valleys, limestone pavements, rolling moorland, historic villages and rich wildlife habitats. Covering parts of North Yorkshire, Cumbria and Lancashire, the National Park spans more than 2,000 square kilometres and is recognised for its natural beauty, cultural heritage and distinctive rural character.

The Authority works to conserve and enhance the landscape, support local communities, and help people enjoy the Dales responsibly. Its work includes managing rights of way, protecting biodiversity, supporting sustainable farming, conserving heritage assets, enabling nature recovery, and promoting outdoor recreation. It also plays a key role in planning within the National Park, ensuring development is sensitive, sustainable and aligned with long‑term environmental goals.

Through partnerships with farmers, landowners, volunteers, local authorities and national organisations, the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority aims to keep the Dales a living, working landscape — one that balances conservation with community needs and welcomes millions of visitors each year. From iconic features like Malham Cove and Whernside to its network of footpaths, bridleways and quiet villages, the Authority champions everything that makes the Yorkshire Dales unique.
