BNG Compliance Continues to Shape Planning Policy and Recruitment Needs

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) has now fully embedded itself into planning workflows, and councils are rapidly adjusting policy frameworks, validation requirements and internal processes to meet statutory expectations. While most authorities have adopted interim guidance, many are now drafting more detailed SPD‑level documents to provide clarity for applicants.

This evolution is driving a new wave of recruitment needs. Authorities are seeking planners with ecological awareness, experience interpreting metric calculations, and confidence negotiating mitigation strategies. Policy teams, in particular, are expanding capacity to integrate BNG into emerging Local Plans and design codes.

Consultancies are also scaling up, offering BNG advisory services to developers who need support navigating the new requirements. As a result, hybrid planner‑ecologist roles are becoming more common, with strong demand for candidates who can bridge planning policy and environmental assessment.

BNG is no longer a niche consideration — it’s a core part of planning practice. Employers who invest early in specialist skills will be better positioned to support applicants and maintain compliance.
