New Rural Report Calls for Stronger Policy Alignment & Community‑Led Planning

A major new report sets out how government policy should better support rural communities across England.

• Future of Rural England report published The Rural Taskforce has identified six critical themes for rural resilience: economic growth, infrastructure and housing, skills, health, safety, and connectivity.

• New cross‑government board established A cross‑department board will ensure rural needs are embedded in major policy decisions, with annual public reporting on progress.

• Rural England contributes £259 billion to the economy More than half a million rural SMEs drive manufacturing, tourism, agriculture and renewable energy — highlighting the scale of rural economic potential.

• Persistent rural challenges remain Transport gaps, digital connectivity issues, hidden health inequalities and limited affordable housing continue to constrain rural communities.

Policy outlook The report calls for stronger rural proofing, clearer metrics for rural resilience, and better alignment between devolution plans and rural housing/infrastructure needs.
