Description

Cumberland Council is the unitary authority serving the north and west of Cumbria, covering the communities of Carlisle, Workington, Whitehaven, Maryport, Wigton, Silloth, Cockermouth and the surrounding rural and coastal areas. Formed in 2023, the council brings together services previously delivered by district councils and Cumbria County Council, creating a single organisation responsible for delivering modern, efficient and joined‑up public services.

The area includes major towns, remote rural communities, the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, key employment centres, and important transport links connecting Cumbria with Scotland and the North West. Cumberland Council provides a wide range of services including planning, housing, social care, environmental health, waste and recycling, highways, transport, leisure, public protection and community wellbeing.

Its priorities focus on sustainable growth, improving infrastructure, supporting local businesses, strengthening communities, and protecting the area’s natural and cultural assets. The council works closely with partners, voluntary organisations and regional bodies to deliver high‑quality services and long‑term investment across the region.

Whether enabling new development, supporting families, improving public spaces or investing in coastal and rural communities, Cumberland Council is committed to keeping the area a resilient, welcoming and forward‑looking place to live, work and visit.
