Description

Folkestone & Hythe District Council serves a diverse coastal district in South East England, covering the towns of Folkestone, Hythe, Hawkinge, Lydd, New Romney, Sandgate, Dymchurch, Cheriton and the surrounding rural areas. The council provides services to the people who live, work and study across the district, including planning, housing, environmental protection, waste and recycling, licensing, community support, and democratic services.

The district itself is a mix of dramatic coastline, the North Downs, and the low‑lying Romney Marsh. It includes major infrastructure such as the Eurotunnel Folkestone Terminal, and benefits from strong transport links to London and continental Europe. The council is headquartered at the Civic Centre in Folkestone, the district’s largest town.

Formed in 1974 and renamed in 2018, the authority has a long history of supporting sustainable development, protecting the natural environment, and improving the quality of life for its residents. It continues to invest in regeneration projects such as Folkestone – A Brighter Future, aimed at creating safer, greener and more welcoming town‑centre spaces.

Folkestone & Hythe District Council is committed to flexible working, community engagement, and delivering high‑quality public services across the district’s towns, villages and coastal communities.
