Working at Gateshead Council
Gateshead Council is the metropolitan borough council for Gateshead, on the south bank of the Tyne opposite Newcastle. It covers Gateshead town centre and Quayside, Felling, Whickham, Blaydon, Ryton, Birtley and Low Fell, along with rural villages to the west, and runs services from the Civic Centre on Regent Street.
Gateshead shares a joint Core Strategy with Newcastle, supported by the council's own detailed planning policies. Growth and regeneration are focused on Gateshead Quays beside the Baltic and The Glasshouse, the town centre, and employment areas such as the Team Valley and the Metrocentre. The western half of the borough is largely green belt and countryside along the Derwent valley. Planners deal with town centre and riverside regeneration, housing sites and green belt casework across a mixed urban and rural borough.
