Orkney Islands Council

Currently Advertising: 1 job

Description

Orkney Islands Council serves as the unitary authority for the Orkney Islands, delivering the full range of local government services across the archipelago. Established in 1975 and headquartered in Kirkwall, the Council oversees key areas including education, social care, housing, environmental health, roads, waste management, economic development and emergency planning. It also operates as the harbour authority for Orkney, managing 29 piers and harbours across the islands — a vital role given Orkney’s maritime economy and dispersed communities.

Governance is carried out by 21 councillors, the vast majority of whom are independents, reflecting Orkney’s tradition of non‑party local representation. The Council focuses on community participation, financial transparency, and long‑term planning, with accessible routes for residents to engage in decision‑making, attend meetings, contact councillors, and contribute to consultations. Its priorities centre on sustaining island life, supporting local communities, and ensuring resilient services in a unique geographic environment.
