Planning in Telford and Wrekin

Telford and Wrekin Council is a unitary authority covering the new town of Telford, the market town of Newport and the villages of east Shropshire. It deals with all planning matters, including minerals, waste and highways. Telford was designated a new town in the 1960s, absorbing older settlements such as Wellington, Oakengates, Dawley and Madeley, and growth on a large scale remains a defining feature.

The Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site lies on the southern side of Telford, with the Iron Bridge, Coalbrookdale and the museums of the gorge, so heritage protection and the gorge's unstable slopes both shape decisions there. Telford town centre and large business parks along the M54 bring major regeneration and employment schemes, and big housing developments continue on the edges of the town. The Wrekin hill is part of the Shropshire Hills National Landscape, and Harper Adams University lies just outside Newport. Openings here include development management, regeneration, policy and heritage roles.
