Planning in Shropshire
Shropshire Council is the unitary authority for most of the county, one of the largest and most rural council areas in England. It handles all planning matters, including minerals, waste and highways. Shrewsbury, the county town, is the main focus for growth, and the market towns of Oswestry, Bridgnorth, Ludlow, Market Drayton, Whitchurch, Church Stretton and Wem each have their own role.
The Shropshire Hills National Landscape covers much of the south-west of the county, including the Long Mynd and Wenlock Edge, and landscape impact is a regular test for development there. Heritage is everywhere, from Shrewsbury's medieval and Tudor streets and the restored Flaxmill Maltings to Ludlow's castle and Georgian town centre. The River Clun catchment is protected for its freshwater pearl mussels, which constrains development there, and the east of the county includes Green Belt bordering the West Midlands. Agriculture brings applications for livestock units and farm diversification. Roles here cover rural development management, heritage, policy and growth planning across a very large area.
