The Port of London Authority (PLA) is the organisation responsible for overseeing safe navigation, environmental protection and operational management along 95 miles of the tidal River Thames, from Teddington to the North Sea. As the statutory harbour authority, the PLA ensures the river remains safe, sustainable and commercially active for the thousands of vessels, businesses and communities that rely on it.

The PLA’s work covers river operations, hydrographic surveying, harbour management, licensing, safety regulation, environmental monitoring, marine services and long‑term river planning.
