Planning in Plymouth

Plymouth City Council is a unitary authority, so it handles all planning in the city, from householder cases to minerals, waste and highways. It shares the Plymouth and South West Devon Joint Local Plan with South Hams and West Devon, reflecting the way the city's housing and jobs market spills over its boundary. The city centre was rebuilt after wartime bombing to a bold post-war plan, and much of that layout is now treated as heritage in its own right.

Plymouth's identity is tied to the sea: Devonport is a major naval base and dockyard, and Plymouth Sound has been named the UK's first National Marine Park. The Plymouth and South Devon Freeport, regeneration of the waterfront and city centre, and growth at Derriford and in the north of the city all generate planning work. Sherford, a new town on the eastern edge, straddles the city boundary. Planners in Plymouth can find roles in regeneration, major projects, policy and casework, as well as at consultancies serving Devon and Cornwall.
