Planning in Antrim and Newtownabbey

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council covers the area between north Belfast and the north-east shore of Lough Neagh, including Newtownabbey, Glengormley, Antrim, Ballyclare, Randalstown and Crumlin. It took on planning powers in 2015, with the Department for Infrastructure keeping decisions on regionally significant schemes, and its Local Development Plan guides housing and employment land.

Belfast International Airport at Aldergrove sits in the borough, and business parks close to the M2 and M22 draw employment uses. The Newtownabbey side is suburban and closely tied to Belfast, while the rural west and the Six Mile Water valley raise countryside and Lough Neagh issues. Antrim's castle gardens and round tower add heritage interest. Planners here handle a balance of suburban housing, business development and rural applications.
