Planning in Mid Ulster

Mid Ulster District Council covers the west shore of Lough Neagh and the Sperrin foothills, with Dungannon, Cookstown and Magherafelt the main towns and Coalisland, Maghera and Moneymore among the smaller ones. Since 2015 it has decided planning applications, with the Department for Infrastructure keeping those of regional significance.

The district is known for manufacturing, particularly firms making quarrying and materials-handling equipment, and for agri-food, so the expansion of industry in rural areas is common. Single houses in the countryside, quarries, Lough Neagh and part of the Sperrin Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty raise rural and environmental questions. Town-centre investment in the three main towns runs alongside, making this a good grounding in rural and industrial planning.
