About the area
Planning in Newry, Mourne and Down
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council covers south-east Northern Ireland, from the border at Newry and South Armagh to Downpatrick and the shores of Strangford Lough. Its towns include Newry, Downpatrick, Newcastle, Kilkeel, Warrenpoint, Ballynahinch and Crossmaglen. It has been the planning authority since 2015.
Landscape dominates: the Mourne, Ring of Gullion and Strangford and Lough Cuan Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty cover large parts of the district, so siting and design in the countryside are constant topics. Warrenpoint's port, Kilkeel's fishing harbour and the A1 corridor towards Dublin bring economic projects, while Newcastle and the Mournes draw visitors. Downpatrick's links with Saint Patrick and the city centre of Newry add heritage and regeneration work, much of it with a cross-border dimension.
