About the area
Planning in Ards and North Down
Ards and North Down Borough Council covers the coast east of Belfast, from Holywood and Bangor round the Ards Peninsula to Portaferry, along with Newtownards, Comber and Donaghadee. Since 2015 it has decided planning applications and prepared its own Local Development Plan, with the Department for Infrastructure dealing with the regionally significant cases.
Strangford Lough, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with international nature designations, shapes much of the work around its shores. Regeneration of Bangor's seafront is a key project under the Belfast Region City Deal, and demand for coastal and commuter housing is strong. Conservation areas in towns such as Holywood, Donaghadee and Portaferry, the farmland of the Ards and the gardens at Mount Stewart give heritage and landscape real weight in decisions.
