Planning in Blaenau Gwent
Blaenau Gwent sits at the top of the South Wales valleys, with Ebbw Vale, Tredegar, Abertillery and Brynmawr as its main towns. Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council is the local planning authority, working within Future Wales: the National Plan 2040, Planning Policy Wales and its own Local Development Plan. The borough is part of the Cardiff Capital Region and borders Bannau Brycheiniog National Park to the north.
Coal and steel built these towns, and regeneration after their decline is the main thread of planning here. The former steelworks at Ebbw Vale, known as The Works, has been redeveloped with a hospital, college, housing and offices, and the dualled A465 Heads of the Valleys road has improved links east and west. Town centre renewal, reuse of former industrial land and upland landscapes shape much of the work. Planners in Blaenau Gwent tend to cover a wide range, from regeneration projects to everyday casework.
