Planning in Swansea
Swansea is Wales's second city, spread around Swansea Bay with the Gower Peninsula to the west. The City and County of Swansea Council is the planning authority, covering the city centre, the Mumbles, Morriston, Gorseinon, Pontarddulais and the Gower villages. It works within Future Wales, Planning Policy Wales and its Local Development Plan, and is a partner in the Swansea Bay City Deal.
Regeneration of the city centre is a major theme, with the Copr Bay arena and new homes, offices and public spaces helping to bring life back into the centre. The lower Swansea Valley, once a centre of copper smelting, has been transformed, and the Hafod-Morfa copperworks site is a heritage-led regeneration project. Gower was the first area in the UK designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so landscape protection and coastal tourism are key there. Swansea offers planners regeneration, heritage, landscape and casework roles, with consultancies active across the city region.
