About the area
Planning in Wrexham
Wrexham is the main city of north-east Wales, close to the border with Cheshire and Shropshire. Wrexham County Borough Council is the planning authority for the city and surrounding communities including Gresford, Rhosllanerchrugog, Ruabon, Chirk, Llay and Coedpoeth. It works within Future Wales, Planning Policy Wales and its Local Development Plan, and is part of the North Wales Growth Deal.
Wrexham Industrial Estate is a very large manufacturing base, so employment land and industrial schemes play a big part in planning work. City centre regeneration and investment around the Racecourse Ground are priorities, alongside new housing on the city's edges. To the south, the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site and the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty bring heritage and landscape issues, while former coal mining villages need regeneration. Wrexham suits planners seeking variety from industry to heritage.
