Planning in Newport

Newport is a city on the River Usk, close to the Severn crossings and the border with England. Newport City Council is the unitary planning authority, deciding applications in line with Future Wales, Planning Policy Wales and its Local Development Plan. The city is part of the Cardiff Capital Region and has good links to both Cardiff and Bristol along the M4 and main railway line.

City centre regeneration, around the riverfront and the station, is a long-running priority, along with new housing on brownfield land. On the site of the former Llanwern steelworks, the Glan Llyn development has created a large new neighbourhood. The low-lying Gwent Levels, with their network of drainage ditches, are protected for wildlife, which shapes development on the eastern side of the city. Heritage ranges from the Roman fortress at Caerleon to the Newport Transporter Bridge. Newport offers planners work on regeneration, major housing schemes and casework near the M4.
