Planning in Gwynedd
Gwynedd covers the north-west of Wales, from the Llŷn Peninsula and Caernarfon through Bangor to Porthmadog, Pwllheli, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Bala, Dolgellau and Tywyn. Eryri National Park Authority plans for the large mountainous centre of the county, while Gwynedd Council is the planning authority for the rest, using a Joint Local Development Plan shared with the Isle of Anglesey. National policy comes from Future Wales and Planning Policy Wales.
Gwynedd has the highest proportion of Welsh speakers of any council area, so protecting the language and community life is central to planning decisions. Second homes and holiday lets are a major concern, and the council has used planning controls to manage changes of use. Heritage is unusually rich: Caernarfon and Harlech castles are part of one World Heritage Site and the Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales is another. The Llŷn Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty protects much of the peninsula's coast. Planning roles here often call for Welsh language skills.
