Planning in Aberdeenshire

Aberdeenshire Council covers a large and varied area around Aberdeen, from the fishing ports of Fraserburgh, Peterhead and Banff to Inverurie, Ellon, Westhill, Stonehaven, Huntly and Banchory. Upper Deeside and Donside, including Ballater and Braemar, lie in the Cairngorms National Park, where the Park Authority prepares the development plan and can call in applications. Elsewhere the council decides applications under NPF4 and its own Local Development Plan.

Growth is focused along the main routes out of Aberdeen, including the new town of Chapelton near Newtonhill, while the rural north and west deal with farming, small settlements and renewables. Peterhead's harbour and power station, and grid connections for offshore wind, make energy a major theme. Castles, estates, planned villages and coastal settlements add plenty of conservation and listed building work, so the job here moves between strategic growth and rural casework.
