Planning in North Ayrshire

North Ayrshire Council covers the mainland coast from Skelmorlie and Largs south to Irvine, plus the islands of Arran and Great Cumbrae. Irvine, a former new town, is the largest centre, with Kilwinning, Saltcoats, Ardrossan, Stevenston, West Kilbride and Beith also in the area. Planning decisions follow NPF4 and the council's Local Development Plan.

Ardrossan is the ferry port for Arran, and Hunterston, on the coast near West Kilbride, is a focus for industrial and energy-related reuse since its nuclear power station closed. Renewal of the coastal towns and employment land at Irvine sit alongside the Ayrshire Growth Deal. Arran brings island issues of housing, tourism and landscape, with a National Scenic Area covering the north of the island. Few councils give planners such a mix of island, coastal and industrial work.
