Planning in Argyll and Bute

Argyll and Bute is a scattered council area of peninsulas and islands, covering Kintyre, Cowal, Mid Argyll and Lorn on the mainland along with Bute, Mull, Islay, Jura, Tiree and many smaller islands. Its towns include Oban, Helensburgh, Dunoon, Campbeltown, Rothesay and Lochgilphead, where the council is based. Around Arrochar and parts of Cowal, the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park Authority is the planning authority instead of the council.

Planning here is shaped by distance and the sea. The council is the planning authority for fish farms in its coastal waters, and aquaculture, whisky distilleries on Islay, renewables and tourism all generate casework. Housing for local people, ferry links and fragile island communities are recurring concerns, and the naval base at Faslane near Helensburgh is a major presence. National Scenic Areas cover much of the coast and islands, so landscape judgement is part of most decisions.
