Planning in Na h-Eileanan Siar
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, based in Stornoway, is the planning authority for the Outer Hebrides: Lewis and Harris, North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist, Barra and the smaller islands. It is the only Scottish council with an official Gaelic name, and the islands are a heartland of the Gaelic language. Decisions are made under NPF4 and the council's Local Development Plan.
Crofting, peatland, machair and coastal landscapes shape most decisions, and National Scenic Areas cover large parts of South Lewis, Harris, North Uist and South Uist. St Kilda, far out in the Atlantic, is a World Heritage Site. Renewable energy and grid links to the mainland, housing for local people, tourism and population decline are recurring themes, and the council is part of the Islands Growth Deal with Orkney and Shetland. Roles here involve a close knowledge of island and crofting communities.
