Planning in South Lanarkshire

South Lanarkshire stretches from the southern edge of Glasgow at Rutherglen and Cambuslang through Hamilton and East Kilbride to the rural Clydesdale towns of Lanark, Carluke, Biggar and Strathaven. South Lanarkshire Council is the planning authority, working within NPF4 and its Local Development Plan.

New Lanark, the restored cotton mill village by the Falls of Clyde, is a World Heritage Site. East Kilbride, Scotland's first new town, and Hamilton are the main centres for regeneration, and large growth areas have been planned on the edges of several towns. The southern uplands host many wind farms, the M74 corridor draws logistics schemes, and regeneration in Rutherglen and Cambuslang links with Clyde Gateway. The council is part of the Glasgow City Region City Deal, and its size means a wide choice of planning roles.
