Planning in Highland
Highland Council is the planning authority for the largest council area in the UK, running from Fort William and Skye to Caithness and Sutherland in the far north. Inverness is its main city, with towns including Nairn, Dingwall, Invergordon, Thurso, Wick, Portree and Ullapool. Around Aviemore and Badenoch the area lies in the Cairngorms National Park, whose Park Authority sets planning policy and can call in applications.
Renewable energy dominates much of the casework: onshore wind, pumped storage hydro, offshore wind ports and major grid upgrades to carry power south. The Inverness and Cromarty Firth Green Freeport, growth around Inverness, and the shortage of homes in rural and tourist areas are other big issues. The Flow Country of Caithness and Sutherland is a World Heritage Site, and many National Scenic Areas cover the west coast and islands. Planners here handle some of the largest energy projects in Britain alongside crofts and village housing.
