Planning in East Renfrewshire

South of Glasgow, East Renfrewshire combines the suburbs of Newton Mearns, Giffnock, Clarkston and Thornliebank with the town of Barrhead and the villages of Neilston, Busby and Eaglesham. East Renfrewshire Council is the planning authority, guided by NPF4 and its own Local Development Plan.

Housing demand is high and green belt surrounds the built-up area, so new neighbourhoods and town-centre improvements are carefully planned, some of them funded through the Glasgow City Region City Deal. Eaglesham, an 18th-century planned village, is a conservation area, and the southern moorland includes part of Whitelee Windfarm and the Dams to Darnley Country Park. Applications are mostly householder and residential, with regeneration work in Barrhead. It suits planners who enjoy careful, design-led casework in a suburban setting.
