South Ayrshire runs down the Firth of Clyde coast from Troon and Prestwick through Ayr to Maybole, Girvan and Ballantrae. South Ayrshire Council handles planning, guided by NPF4 and its Local Development Plan.
Prestwick Airport and the aerospace companies around it form an important employment cluster, backed by the Ayrshire Growth Deal. Golf at Royal Troon and Turnberry, the Burns heritage of Alloway and the seafront at Ayr support a strong tourism economy, while Ayr town centre is a regeneration focus. Further south the area is rural, with farming, forestry and wind farms, and part of it lies within the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere.
