About the area
Planning in Aberdeen City
Aberdeen City Council plans for Scotland's third city, a granite-built port long tied to North Sea oil and gas. Its Local Development Plan works alongside National Planning Framework 4, and a green belt around the city steers where new neighbourhoods can go.
The energy transition is the defining theme, from offshore wind and hydrogen proposals to the expanded harbour at Nigg Bay, known as Aberdeen South Harbour. City-centre regeneration around Union Street and the beachfront, large new communities on the edge of the city, and the historic streets of Old Aberdeen keep the workload varied. Projects under the Aberdeen City Region Deal tie the council closely to Aberdeenshire, and the city's consultancies and energy companies employ planners who work right across the north east.
