Planning in East Lothian

East Lothian runs along the coast east of Edinburgh, from Musselburgh and Prestonpans through North Berwick to Dunbar, with Haddington as its county town and Tranent inland. East Lothian Council handles planning under NPF4 and its Local Development Plan, with green belt protecting the west of the area.

Housing growth has been strong, and Blindwells, a new town between Tranent and Prestonpans, is the biggest single project. The former Cockenzie power station site and Torness nuclear power station near Dunbar are major energy sites, and offshore wind cables come ashore on this coast. Golf links, conservation villages and the Lammermuir Hills give strong landscape and heritage interest, and the council is part of the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal. The result is a busy mix of growth, energy and conservation work.
