Planning in Shetland Islands

Shetland Islands Council, based in Lerwick, is the planning authority for the most northerly islands in the UK. Lerwick and Scalloway are the main settlements, with crofting townships spread across Mainland, Yell, Unst, Whalsay and the smaller isles. NPF4 and the council's Local Development Plan set the framework for decisions.

Energy shapes much of the work: the Sullom Voe oil and gas terminal, the Viking wind farm and the subsea cable linking Shetland to the national grid. Fishing, aquaculture, piers and harbours, and a spaceport on Unst add distinctive projects. Housing for local workers, archaeology at sites such as Jarlshof and Mousa, the coastal landscapes of the Shetland National Scenic Area and the Islands Growth Deal complete the picture. It is planning on a small scale with some very large projects.
