Planning in Dumfries and Galloway

Dumfries and Galloway Council covers south-west Scotland, from Gretna and Annan on the English border to Stranraer and the Rhins of Galloway. Dumfries is the largest town, and others include Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright, Newton Stewart, Lockerbie, Moffat and Wigtown. Applications are decided under NPF4 and the council's Local Development Plan.

This is mainly rural planning: farming, forestry, onshore wind and the Solway coast, along with several National Scenic Areas and the Galloway Forest Park, a dark sky park. The ferry ports at Cairnryan, with routes to Northern Ireland, and the A75 and A77 are key infrastructure, and the council is part of the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal with councils on both sides of the border. Wind farm and grid applications, tourism and the renewal of small towns make up a large share of the work.
